PETER DAVID - MIXING IT UP WITH SHE-HULK & X-FACTOR
by Vaneta Rogers
At last Saturday's Secret Invasion panel at WizardWorld: LA, among all the talk about Skrulls and trust issues, fans heard about writer Peter David's crossover between the She-Hulk and X-Factor titles.
Both written by David, the titles will crossover beginning in X-Factor #33, continuing in She-Hulk #31, then concluding in X-Factor #34. And according to David, the story will tie into an element of the Skrull invasion of the Marvel Universe.
Newsarama talked to the writer to find out more about the crossover and how She-Hulk's friend Jazinda, the daughter of Super-Skrull, will possibly play into Secret Invasion.
Newsarama: From where did you get the idea to cross over X-Factor and She-Hulk as a tie-in to Secret Invasion? Is this something that's been planned for awhile?
Peter David: Well, the fans were asking to see a She-Hulk/X-Factor crossover, and the timing of it just seemed to cry out to relate to Secret Invasion, particularly with the presence of Jazinda in the book.
NRAMA: Yeah! You already have a Skrull in your comic. What can you tell us about her, and has it been planned since before she showed up in the book that she would be part of Secret Invasion?
PD: Jazinda is a female Skrull bounty hunter who wound up on Earth through a series of events that have yet to be disclosed, and wound up developing a partnership with She-Hulk. She is also the Super-Skrull's daughter, and he has sworn that next time he sees her, he's going to kill her. As for it being planned, no. Having her in the book gave me the option of having it develop organically from the series, but it wasn't my primary incentive for including her in the series. If we weren't doing Secret Invasion, I'd still have brought her into the book.

NRAMA: In the spirit of "Who do you trust?," should She-Hulk readers – and She-Hulk herself – be keeping an eye on Jazinda?
PD: That would be telling.
NRAMA: So... then maybe it's characters in X-Factor who shouldn't be trusted? Is there a Skrull within their ranks?
PD: There's always a chance.
NRAMA: As you said, Super-Skrull said within the pages of She-Hulk that he intended to kill his daughter if he ever sees her again. Is it fair to guess that he will be involved in Secret Invasion? Will more information about their obviously broken relationship be revealed?
PD: There is always the possibility that Super-Skrull will be involved in Secret Invasion, but I really couldn't say. But if and when Jaz and her father meet up, yes, there will be info about their relationship given.
NRAMA: The two books seem like they function in very different worlds. What's the motivation for their interaction?
PD: She-Hulk and Jaz wind up colliding with X-Factor in the midst of a case. Basically She-Hulk and Jaz are pursuing one individual and X-Factor is pursuing the other. And since the two individuals are travelling together, it's natural for the two groups to run into each other, at which point hilarity ensues.
NRAMA: Is this a true crossover between the two comics? Or is it just a tie-in?
PD: Yes, it's a genuine crossover. The story starts in X-Factor, goes directly into She-Hulk, and then leads back out of it into X-Factor again. As for choosing the option, it's basically the way I've done such crossovers before when it was me writing both titles, and the fans always seemed to get a kick out of that. And, again, I'm doing this one literally because the fans asked to see it. It was one of the first reactions fans had when it was announced I was doing She-Hulk: "Let's see a crossover with X-Factor."
NRAMA: Which characters from the two series do you look forward to being able to throw together in these issues?
PD: She-Hulk and Monet, definitely, and She-Hulk and Guido. Then there's Jaz and Madrox. That should be interesting.
NRAMA: So will this story be something non-readers of X-Factor and She-Hulk can pick up and understand? Are you designing it that way?
PD: Absolutely. Ideally, anyone picking up any issue of X-Factor or She-Hulk should be able to understand what's going on. I never write stories designed to leave people in the dark.
NRAMA: X-Factor hasn't really recovered from what happened in Messiah Complex, and now it's going to be involved in Secret Invasion. Is this going to be a smooth transition from the current story into the next one, or is their world going to be turned upside down by whatever brings the team into this story?
PD: There's no such thing as a smooth anything for X-Factor.
