Justin Ponsor, Marvel Comics Colorist, Passes Away

Acclaimed Marvel Comics colorist Justin Ponsor passed away over the past weekend. Ponsor was previously diagnosed with cancer and had been undergoing treatment.
The announcement of his passing was made on his Facebook account earlier today, which said that he passed away in his home surrounded by loved ones on May 18, 2019.

Ponsor worked on numerous Marvel comic books over the years, including high-profile titles Avengers, Defenders, Uncanny X-Men, Civil War II, Guardians of the Galaxy and Star Wars, among others. Additionally, Ponsor has worked on several Spider-Man titles during his time at Marvel, and was instrumental to the early days of Miles Morales, the Ultimate Universe's second Spider-Man. Outside of Marvel, he also worked on titles for WildStorm and Crossgen.

In the wake of his passing, several of Ponsor's colleagues have taken to social media to honor his memory, including writer Jason Aaron and artist David Marquez, Ponsor's collaborators on Marvel's current Avengers title.

"I just learned that my friend and long-time artistic partner Justin Ponsos passed away this weekend," Marquez tweeted. "I can't express just how much working with him has meant to me over the past eight years. The world is lesser place for his loss but all of us are made better for having known him."

"I'm truly heartbroken to hear that Justin Ponsor has passed away after a long battle with cancer," added Aaron. "He'd been doing his usual amazing work on the Avengers whenever he could, including from his hospital bed. I got nothing but respect for that man. Love and condolences to his family."

Other comics industry pros to offer their condolences include artists Matt Wilson and Cully Hamner, writers Dan Slott and Kelly Thompson, writer/artist Brian Michael Bendis and Marvel Editor-in-Chief C.B. Cebulski, among many others.

Last February, a GoFundMe campaign to help cover Ponsor's medical costs was launched by Alex Car, one of the artist's close friends, after Ponsor opened up about the severity of his condition on his blog. The campaign ultimately raised a total of $5,400.

    Ponsor was 42 years old.
