With Spider-Man: Fairy Tales, you’re following up your popular X-Men: Fairy Tales series. What was the difference in picking classic folk tales to synch up with just Spider-Man as opposed to the whole team of X-Men?
CEBULSKI: This one we did a little differently, because with X-Men, we wanted to take a specific character and their background and fit them into a mythology from their roots. The idea was Storm as an African tale and Colossus as a Russian tale, and we did international tales for all four, but they didn’t line up exactly. Here, there were references to spiders in fairy tales and things like “The Itsy Bitsy Spider,” but there wasn’t enough to base a tale on so we went with more mainstream fairy tales for these stories. Little Red Riding Hood is the first one with Mary Jane, because with the hair it worked out really well. And it just so happened that with Spider-Man being back in black right now, the black costume fit much better in that story than the blue and red. We’re doing a reverse Cinderella take with Peter Parker being Cinderella and Norman Osborn being the “evil stepfather.” We’re doing another African fairy tale based on the legend of Anansi, like Neil Gaiman did [with his novel] Anansi Boys, which has become one of the more well-known African fairy tales. We’re definitely trying to hit more popular and recognizable fairy tales this time around than the obscure international ones.
Do Gwen Stacy or other older characters pop up, or did you stick to the current cast?
CEBULSKI: We tried to hit different relationships in his life. That was thought out. The first one is Spider-Man and Mary Jane. The Anansi one is his relationship with Uncle Ben and also his villains. The third one is a retelling of the origin that’s going to focus more on Felicia, the Black Cat. And the fourth one is the Cinderella one about the father-son triangle with Harry, Norman and Peter as almost the adopted son. We’re playing with different relationships and characters. Gwen is alluded to as a cautionary tale.
