'Doom Patrol' Series Coming to DC Universe Streaming Service

    Russ Burlingame

    05/14/2018

DC Universe, the streaming service from DC Entertainment, has ordered a 13-episode season of Doom Patrol, a new series spinning out of the network's Titans.

Even in a crowded field of pickups and cancellations, Doom Patrol is likely to get noticed: not only is it a spinoff from a seriesthat has not yet premiered, but it is yet another series from Greg Berlanti, the super-producer whose shingle currently has more shows on TV than anyone in history.

According to Warner Bros Television, the Doom Patrol series "is a re-imagining of one of DCs most beloved group of outcast Super Heroes: Robotman, Negative Man, Elasti-Girl and Crazy Jane, led by modern-day mad scientist Dr. Niles Caulder (The Chief). The Doom Patrol's members each suffered horrible accidents that gave them superhuman abilities but also left them scarred and disfigured. Traumatized and downtrodden, the team found purpose through The Chief, who brought them together to investigate the weirdest phenomena in existence and to protect Earth from what they find. Part support group, part Super Hero team, the Doom Patrol is a band of super-powered freaks who fight for a world that wants nothing to do with them. Picking up after the events of Titans, Doom Patrol will find these reluctant heroes in a place they never expected to be, called to action by none other than Cyborg, who comes to them with a mission hard to refuse, but with a warning that is hard to ignore: their lives will never, ever be the same."

Casting has not yet been officially announced, although it is likely safe to assume that the same actors who will play Doom Patrol on Titans will carry over. That would be Bruno Bichir as The Chief, Jake Michaels as Robotman, and April Bowlby as Elasti-Girl.

The one-hour drama comes from executive producers Greg Berlanti, Geoff Johns, Jeremy Carver, and Sarah Schechter . The pilot was written by Carver.

The original Doom Patrol was created by Arnold Drake, Bob Haney, and Bruno Premiani in 1963. "The World's Strangest Heroes" originally consisted of The Chief, Robotman, Elasti-Girl, and Negative Man. Given their lack of cultural acceptance within the DC Universe, the strange-looking characters, and a mentor in a wheelchair, the team has often been compared to Marvel's more successful X-Men franchise.

Doom Patrol has had its biggest commercial success in the comics when it was being treated as a strange, experimental playground for visionary creators. Grant Morrison's Doom Patrol was so crazy, trippy, and bold that reprints eventually moved from DC proper to the company's Vertigo imprint. That run remains beloved decades later, with a recent run of reprints.

A couple of years ago, the title was relaunched as the flagship for DC's Young Animal imprint; written by My Chemical Romance frontman Gerard Way, the title has received critical acclaim and enough commercial success to justify a major crossover with Justice League of America -- "Milk Wars," by Way and Justice League of America writer Steve Orlando alongside a murderer's row of top art talent.

Breaking News: Timothy Dalton Leads the Doom Patrol

Genius. Visionary. Accomplished. Eccentric. Maybe a little insane. Dr. Niles Caulder, known more informally as “the Chief,” is the wheelchair-bound scientist who traditionally leads the quirky band of heroes called the Doom Patrol. Caulder is, in a word, brilliant. And so is this casting choice.

It was just announced that acclaimed actor Timothy Dalton (James Bond, Doctor Who, Wuthering Heights) will be playing the role of Caulder on Doom Patrol, the upcoming live action series based on the legendary comic book series. Having played both heroes and villains on screen and stage, Dalton should be well suited to the character, who has historically been a bit of both.

According to the Chief’s Doom Patrol character description, Dr. Caulder is a pioneer in medical science, searching the world over for those on the edge of death in need of a miracle. Brilliant, but controversial, Dr. Caulder will stop at nothing to help those he believes are in need, including his collection of strange heroes known as The Doom Patrol.

That “controversial” note may prove to be key. In Grant Morrison’s infamous run on the comic series, the Chief was revealed to be plotting to destroy much of the world in an attempt to restart human society. He was stopped by the Doom Patrol (getting decapitated in the process, which led to him living life as nothing more than a conscious, cryogenically preserved head for a while), and eventually seemed to recant his beliefs and once again become a force for good. However, as seen in Gerard Way and Nick Derington’s recent run on Doom Patrol, his ideas are still misguided and as a result, the team is pretty wary of him.

It’s unknown whether the show will follow a similar path with the character, or keep him as a largely heroic figure. Either way, Dalton should be up for the task. Best known for his stint as James Bond in both The Living Daylights and License to Kill, Dalton has been a presence in film since the 1960s, where he made an impression in both The Lion in Winter and Wuthering Heights. Genre fans will probably know him best from his roles in cult faves Flash Gordon, The Rocketeer and Hot Fuzz, and his appearance as a villainous Time Lord in Doctor Who opposite David Tennant.

Doom Patrol is already shaping up to be as fascinating as its source material, even prior to production. Dalton is the latest in a string of high profile casting announcements that have piqued plenty of fan curiosity. Last week, Deadline announced that Alan Tudyk had been cast as Mr. Nobody, which followed the news that Brendan Fraser would be voicing Robotman as well as playing Cliff Steele, his pre-robot, human identity. Also recently cast were Joivan Wade as Cyborg, April Bowlby as Elasti-Woman and Diane Guerrero as Crazy Jane.

Doom Patrol will be available exclusively on DC Universe, DC’s digital service which will be officially launching on September 15, 2018. You can sign up for the service at DCUniverse.com.
